WEICON Zinc Spray vs Galva Spray: Choosing Corrosion Protection in Singapore

Small areas of exposed metal are easy to overlook after fabrication or installation. A drilled hole, cut edge or welded joint may look minor, yet it is precisely the sort of detail a maintenance team needs to include in its coating plan. For Singapore workshops, facilities contractors and marine maintenance teams, the useful question is: which coating suits this surface, and how should the repair be prepared?

President Trading’s WEICON anti-corrosion spray listing includes four 400 ml options: Zinc Spray, Zinc Spray Bright Grade, Galva Spray and Stainless Steel Spray. They are not simply four colours of the same product. Use the comparison below to shortlist a coating, then check it against the job specification.

Zinc Spray, Galva Spray or Stainless Steel Spray?

Listed product Main distinction Selection starting point
Zinc Spray Zinc-based cathodic corrosion protection Assess for exposed metal and galvanised-coating touch-ups where zinc protection is specified.
Zinc Spray Bright Grade Cathodic protection with a lighter finish matched to fresh hot-dip galvanising Assess where a brighter appearance matters alongside protection.
Galva Spray Zinc and aluminium pigments; finish matched to hot-dip galvanising Assess for matching touch-ups, welded joints and drilled areas.
Stainless Steel Spray Acrylic-resin coating containing stainless steel pigments Assess when a stainless steel appearance and protective surface coating are required.

Zinc Spray and its bright grade provide active cathodic protection. Stainless Steel Spray uses a different coating formulation; a metallic appearance does not establish the same protection mechanism. Likewise, spraying a steel component does not turn the underlying material into stainless steel.

Start with the existing surface and exposure

Before buying, identify whether the part is bare carbon steel, galvanised steel, stainless steel or an already painted assembly. Then establish what failed: installation damage, abrasion, deterioration of an older coating, or corrosion coming from an inaccessible joint. Treating the visible patch alone may leave the cause unresolved.

For example, a newly installed bracket with a small drilled area presents a different job from a heavily corroded support with missing metal. The first may be a coating-repair task. The second needs an assessment of the component itself before choosing a spray. A coating restores a protective layer; it does not replace lost metal or establish structural fitness.

Also tell your supplier whether the part is indoors, rain-exposed, near salt spray, regularly washed or subject to chemical splashes. “Outdoor use” is a useful description, but it is not a complete specification.

Prepare the repair before opening the can

Plan access, cleaning, masking and curing as one job. Identify loose corrosion and failed coating that need removal under the specified preparation method. Protect nearby labels, seals, finished surfaces and components that should not be coated. If an existing paint layer will remain, check compatibility and adhesion on a small representative area.

WEICON’s Galva Spray instructions specify cleaning and degreasing with Surface Cleaner. President Trading also lists WEICON Cleaner Spray S for general cleaning and degreasing before painting. Confirm the cleaner required by your coating procedure: Cleaner Spray S can affect certain thermoplastics and paint layers, so do not assume every surrounding surface is compatible.

Allow for application and curing time

For Galva Spray specifically, WEICON’s current data sheet gives a processing range of +5°C to +35°C, ideally +18°C to +25°C. It specifies shaking until the mixing ball is clearly audible, then applying evenly in crosswise passes from about 25 cm at room temperature. Zinc Spray is listed as the recommended primer.

The same sheet distinguishes approximately 15 minutes to dust-dry from approximately 10–12 hours to full hardening. These are Galva Spray reference figures, not universal timings for every product in the range. Check the selected variant’s instructions and the actual work conditions before handling, overcoating or returning the part to service.

For site planning, agree who will protect the area while it cures. A correctly selected spray can still become a poor repair if the component is handled, assembled or exposed before the coating is ready.

Three mistakes to avoid when specifying a touch-up

  • Ordering only by colour. Record the required product and preparation system as well as the finish.
  • Using a salt-spray result as a service-life promise. A laboratory test result does not establish how many years a particular installation will last.
  • Calling every silver coating “cold galvanising”. Confirm the formulation and project acceptance criteria, especially when replacing a specified repair system.

What should you send with an enquiry?

A clear photograph is a good start. Add the base metal, existing coating, approximate repair area, exposure conditions and whether a topcoat will follow. Include any customer coating specification and the time available before the assembly must return to use.

For a trial, photograph the prepared area and finished repair, then record the product, application date and follow-up inspection. This gives your team something concrete to compare when the same maintenance issue occurs again.
