Better Tools, Better Work: Why Quality Standards Matter

Better Tools, Better Work: Why Quality Standards Matter

A tool earns its place in a workshop through the work it helps you deliver. A dependable torque wrench supports controlled tightening. A suitable measuring instrument helps you assess a component with confidence. A well-matched power tool helps technicians complete repeated tasks efficiently.

At President Trading, our aim is to select tools that meet relevant standards and offer practical value beyond the minimum requirements. That means considering documented performance, suitability for the application, ease of use and support throughout the tool’s working life.

For customers in maintenance, manufacturing, automotive and engineering, these details can make a difference to consistency, rework and downtime.

Standards give us a starting point

Recognised standards provide defined requirements against which products, processes or services can be assessed. The relevant standard depends on the equipment and the task.

For example, ISO 6789-1 covers conformance testing and marking requirements for hand torque tools used in controlled tightening. The IEC 62841 series addresses safety requirements for categories of electric tools and machinery. These standards cover different aspects of performance and safety; they are useful when applied to the correct product and supported by its documentation.

The practical question is: what does the manufacturer declare for this particular model, and does that match the work you need it to perform?

What “meet or exceed” should mean

Meeting a relevant standard establishes that specified requirements have been satisfied. Exceeding a requirement should describe a measurable advantage supported by evidence—for example, a tighter declared accuracy tolerance under comparable conditions.

Other advantages may sit outside the standard entirely. Better access in a confined space, clearer readings, more comfortable handling or easier servicing can still make a tool a better choice for daily work.

Our selection approach aims to bring these considerations together. We look for tools whose specifications suit the application and whose practical benefits justify the investment.

A higher maximum rating alone does not settle that decision. A torque wrench must cover the required working range. A measuring instrument needs suitable accuracy as well as a readable display. A cordless tool needs to suit the material, accessory and workload.

Understand what the documentation tells you

Different documents answer different questions.

A manufacturer’s declaration of conformity or conformance identifies the requirements it declares the product meets. A calibration certificate records measurement results under stated conditions. ISO 9001 certification concerns an organisation’s quality-management system; it does not certify the performance of each individual tool.

Where accredited calibration is required, the issuing laboratory and its relevant accredited scope matter. In Singapore, SAC-SINGLAS assesses the competence of testing and calibration laboratories against applicable requirements, including ISO/IEC 17025.

Traceability also has a specific meaning: measurement results are linked to a reference through a documented calibration chain that accounts for measurement uncertainty. The uncertainty must still be suitable for the customer’s measurement requirement.

Sharing your certificate requirements before ordering helps establish the right product and calibration arrangement from the outset.

Quality continues after purchase

Good tool selection is the beginning. Correct accessories, proper handling, inspection, storage and maintenance help preserve performance. Measuring and torque tools may also need periodic calibration or verification according to their use, manufacturer guidance and your quality procedures.

We believe these practical considerations belong in the buying decision. A tool’s value includes how confidently it can be used, maintained and supported over time.

Our goal at President Trading is to help customers make informed choices: suitable tools, understandable specifications and documentation appropriate to the work.
